There can't be many upsides to a shaky economy but cheaper travel might just be one.
With hotels and airlines vying for customers like never before we are seeing a surge in the number of incentives to entice us back overseas. What with reduced air fares, dinner thrown in with the price of a room, and high-end resorts offering weighty discounts – as much as fifty per cent in some cases, a summer holiday in the sun might not be out of the question, after all.
My aim with Foodtripper is to inspire travellers to experience destinations through their food, to tap into the rich and authentic culinary landscapes that prevail all over the world, and to explore a culture's food history.
I have just returned from the wonderfully chaotic, exotic city of Delhi, but before I boarded I made sure I got the inside track on the best restaurants from Foodtripper columnist, and Indian food expert, Manju Malhi . You can find out where’s hot - literally - in her current feature, Eat, Drink, Live... Delhi.
Elsewhere our resident hotel junkie, Andrew Copestake, is still sleeping off the effects of the signature nine-course breakfast served at the sumptuous Hospes Maricel Hotel in Mallorca. Still on the Iberian Peninsula our Madrid-based correspondent, Rob Train, took a trip to Spain's bleak and beautiful Valle del Jerte to catch the fleeting cherry blossom season and taste the rare and delicious picota variety. Meanwhile, over in the Cotswolds, columnist Becky Sullivan has found the perfect (and sustainable) antidote to overindulgence – growing her own food. Follow her, as she cultivates her own garden, in the Dirty Girl Diaries.
And finally, May is the month for Malt Whisky – or so it would seem if our Events Directory is anything to go by. This month it is positively crammed with opportunities, or should that be excuses, to treat yourself to a trip north of the border and a wee dram.
Welcome to Foodtripper. And please don’t leave without adding your comments to the end of the features you’ve enjoyed most.
We look forward to hearing from you.
