London: Outsider Tart Bake Shop shortlisted for Restaurant Design Award

The US style emporium, which is based in Chiswick, is one of the finalists in the Café or Fast Food category of the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards 2010.
The awards are dedicated exclusively to the celebration of interior design.
Outsider Tart’s interiors are conceived and designed by the bake shop’s co-founder David Lesniak, an established New York architect. He has set out to recreate a semi-retro meets modern/contemporary neighbourhood soda shop.
The result is a prime example of rough luxe, the emerging interiors movement. It’s an authentic marriage of unexpected materials used in unprecedented ways; the vintage juxtaposed with the contemporary; the mixing of immaculate finishes with raw surfaces. “We were up against some impressive and inspirational designers in our award category,” says Lesniak. “We’re delighted to have been shortlisted to the final six.”
Lesniak has combined different styles and periods in a way which can only be described as measured imperfection. In lieu of a pressed tin ceiling like the ones once found in old American ice cream parlours, the Outsider Tarts (Lesniak’s business partner is the former actor turned serial entrepreneur David Muniz) have made theirs using their own bespoke baking pans which are manufactured by Silverwood. Antique circus arrows have been wired as lights and the centerpiece of the bakery is a striking custom made counter which Lesniak has styled on Outsider Tart’s trademark tent stripe. The latter is a uniquely modern possibility given the material (Corian, essentially a plastic with the durability of marble) and computer technology available for its fabrication. The shelving is slated to be scaffolding but put together in a more “tailored” way to obtain long-term flexibility with a rustic charm. The floor was chosen to emulate a “found” or “unearthed” rustic floor board and the walls are painted a very deep dark chocolate brown. The signage itself is made to look as if the two Davids have collected the letters from random sources and simply arranged what they had to spell out the name. And the beater insignia is just that, a giant beater on the side of the building. Sort of a collection of found objects, put together with purpose.
Outsider Tart sells a range of wholesome, homemade layer cakes, brownies, cupcakes, pies, whoopee pies, scones and cookies alongside an established range of original larder items. The shop also sells a selection of breads, teas and coffees.
The restaurant and bar design award winners will be announced on June 22 2010. Further information about the awards can be found here:
