London: Allens of Mayfair - order your turkey online

Allens of Mayfair, the traditional Mount Street butchers responsible for popularising butchery among Londoners with their sell out master classes now bring their superior quality meat, poultry and game to the masses with the long awaited launch of online ordering on their new website.
Alongside an excellent selection of fresh beef, lamb, pork, veal, poultry, game and the full range of Allens sauces, customers can order seasonal products and specials such as the fantastic Steak Box, which contains the finest range of Scottish beef from farms in the Cairngorm National Park.
Another very useful feature is the interactive Cut Explorer, a comprehensive, easy to use guide to various cuts of meat and advice on how to best use them. Whole animals are split into interactive sections. Clicking on a section highlights specific cuts, methods of cooking them and the price category, making it easy for customers to select exactly what they want.
Allens co-owner and master butcher, David House also gives personal recommendations for cuts with ‘wow factor’ and points out which parts of the animal give most flavour, encouraging customers and visitors to the website to look beyond the familiar and opt for scrag end of lamb for hotpots, thin rib of beef (‘Jacob’s ladder’) for barbeques and use mince from the clod for hamburgers for example. Old, traditional cuts such as ‘hand’ or haunch of pork, once used for roasting but now mostly popular for sausages get a mention showing how our eating habits have changed over the centuries.
Some traditions never change and with this in mind, Allens will be bringing out their free-range bronze turkeys in mid November, just in time for Thanksgiving. These superior quality birds are raised on Allens farm in Tenterden, Kent and will be supplied fresh with giblets and a jar of Allens own Cranberry sauce (Allens Bronze Turkeys RRP £12.50 per kg).
The Kent farm is a member of the Traditional Farmfresh Turkey Association which supplies birds under the Golden Promise scheme whereby turkeys are grown slowly, fed a natural diet, reared to full maturity, dry plucked and hung for at least seven days to enhance the flavour, just as they would have been through the centuries.
For the first time, Allens customers will be able to order their turkeys online – the butchers launched online orders on their website this October.
About Allens Allens of Mayfair is the oldest butcher in Britain still operating on its original site. The traditional Mount Street shop with its tiled walls and octagonal butchers block is a haven for carnivores: huge sides of marbled beef, legs and saddles of lamb hang in the windows alongside a fantastic selection of game birds, which are Allens speciality. Renowned for supplying some of London’s finest hotels and restaurants, such as The Dorchester, the neighbouring Connaught, Scotts and The Ivy, in recent years Allens’ master butchers set about educating Londoners about their trade with a series of hugely popular butchery master classes which take place weekly and take in everything from cheap cuts to roasting joints and cost £100 per person including the cuts.
