London: Britain and France go head to head in oyster shucking battle

Britain and France go head to head in an epic Oyster battle at Bentley’s … will it be an Entente Cordiale?

Today sees the start of The Native Oyster season, and to celebrate, Bentley’s Oyster Bar & Grill is hosting a celebrity oyster-shucking competition that will see teams from the iconic Oyster Bar and Mon Plaisir, London’s oldest French restaurant, go head to head in a fierce battle. Other teams will include chef Mark Hix, radio presenter Nigel Barden and writer and broadcaster Amy Lamé, who will compete to open and present 20 oysters to the judging panel made up of Richard Corrigan and a three times world oyster shucker champion!

From today, four different sizes of native oyster will be available and best served natural with Bentley’s brown bread and butter. Oyster Bar guests can sit at the marble-topped bar to watch the oyster shuckers at work, relax in cosy red leather banquettes, or, for as long as the weather holds, enjoy the elegant and peaceful alfresco dining area, on traffic-free Swallow Street. Oysters are also served upstairs in the elegant Grill Rooms. Oysters Rockefeller, Vietnamese style oysters and Honey and Black Pepper oysters are also available.

Set in a beautifully restored Victorian building, Bentley’s provides a classy respite away from the hubbub of Piccadilly. The Oyster Bar is relaxed and buzzing and there is live jazz piano four evenings each week (Wednesday - Saturday). The Grill, located on the first floor is divided into several smaller rooms warmly decorated with William Morris designs and wooden flooring for old-style sophistication.
