Alberta- any volunteers?

Volunteering holidays are taking off as travellers increasingly look for feel-good alternatives that really give back to the community. Whatever floats your boat, Alberta's probably got a volunteer programme to match- how about Organic Farms, Calgary Stampede, First Nations Reserves or Jasper National Park for starters? Alberta and the Rocky mountains are fab destinations for outdoor-types- try hiking, horse riding, or a relaxing soak in the Banff Hot Springs. Rich in local nature and wildlife, volunteering means you get to enjoy the surroundings whilst helping conserve the landscape for future generations of visitors- and enjoy great food and bonhomie into the bargain.
Into The Good Life? 44 farms across Alberta are on the hunt for travellers to learn and apply organic farming and gardening techniques. Your work is rewarded with free food and accommodation- not to mention the new skills you'll keep for life. If hitting the trail is more your bag, Friends of Jasper National Park run projects throughout the summer in the Rockies, working alongside locals in Canada's largest Mountain Park- email to register interest.
Meanwhile, there's the unique chance to work with the Stoney Nakoda First Nation people at the Eden Valley Reserve, where you might be enlisted to update school buildings or improve local churches. In return, the natives will involve you in a pow wow, as well as teaching you the art of beading and making Bannock. If that sounds too serene, and rodeo's more your bag, Calgary Stampede are seeking volunteers in July to work the 10-day world-famous event. There's 45 committees offering from working on the rodeo chutes to assisting with the major Grandstand Show- to learn more, log onto
