For seventeen years, Happ’s owner, Lukka Palsdottir, plied her trade as a personal fitness trainer converting clients, not just to a regular regimen of exercise but also, to the benefits of wholesome, healthy meals which she prepared and administered to them as part of her service. Success followed and now Lukka serves the same live food recipes from this light, bright cafe.

With a nod to health and fitness, I walked for a bracing 20 minutes from the city centre, along the ocean front, to get there.

Brunch arrived on a smooth wooden platter with a sweet and savoury combination of little bites that looked like a colourful burst of spring against the steely grey Atlantic outside. I dipped a hunk of juicy raisin bread into a generous swirl of house made hummus flavoured with sweet red pepper and tangy tomato before licking a dish of spinach and basil pesto clean. A miniature serving of scrambled egg topped with rosemary-infused sweet potato was earthy and filling. The sweetness of a blueberry muffin, sweetened only by its own fruit and a dash of agave syrup, was tempered by a shot of pure ginger juice designed to cleanse the palate. And boy did it.

Lukka insists that her anti-inflammatory recipes prevent cancer and promote good health. Perhaps so, but for me it was the clean flavours and carefully sourced Icelandic ingredients that will take me back for more.

Ask for her recipe book.
