Reykjavik: Local Food Month, October 2012

Specialising in seafood and fish landed daily on the nearby dock, Rub 23’s cool, contemporary cave-like space is a perfect draw for Reykjavik’s night denizens.
 
And here’s the rub: first you choose your fish of choice, next you choose your spice mix from a list of about 10 enticing combinations such as ‘Citrus Rosemary’, ‘Garden Herb’ or ‘Soya Lemon’ to enliven your protein of choice. I couldn’t get enough of the Arctic Char Tempura, (dubbed the new salmon for its rich pale-pink flesh) with unagi sauce and wakame salad. My Char, rubbed in Soya Lemon with its notes of soy and lime, was a joyous plate of sparkling fresh citrusy fish, and hot, crunchy batter. A somewhat unfortunately named Sushi Pizza Tempura was much better than its title suggested and needs a name change to fully justify the two  gloriously ethereal sheets of nori that enveloped a layer of sticky sushi rice in the name of, I guess,  a ‘pizza’ base. My choice of ‘topping’ was, because I couldn’t get enough of it, yet more of the rich, pinky-fleshed Arctic Char tempura.
