Helen Hokin's Spring Picks

We’re just back from feasting and filming at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival – where else to find the whole of North America’s best cheffy food all in one place at the same time.

On the sun-drenched rooftop of the Betsy Hotel, Miami, Foodtripper caught up with the darling of the New York dining scene, three Michelin Star Chef, Daniel Boulud, about his plans for Bar Boulud, launching in London this spring. Watch the exclusive interview on Foodtripper TV.

Festival highlights? Well, there was the crowning of America’s Best Burger, (B Spot from Cleveland, Ohio) a gorgeous combination of goat cheese and pastrami on top of medium rare beef - taste-tested, of course, along with the other 27 entries representing just about as many States. And the celeb spotting - Rachel Ray, Bobby Flay and the lovely, Emeril Lagasse; America’s big telly cooks all turned out in force. And we interviewed them all. Keep watching.

To celebrate food not footy, we have a fantastic two-week holiday to Cape Town and the breathtaking Winelands up for grabs, courtesy of South African fruit growers. Enter the competition here. And it so happens that South African pears are in season now. Food writer, Felicity Cloake samples a few juicy varieties to find that South Africa is a pretty perfect place as far as the pear is concerned. Read about it here

At home, Easter’s fast approaching and in London, the South Bank Chocolate Festival on 26th March has dozens of stalls focused entirely on the dark and delicious world of chocolate, inviting you to experience everything from making, shaping, drinking and eating the lovely stuff. And exhibitor, William Curley has joined Foodtripper to give away a fabulous luxury hamper, filled to bursting with chocolatey goodness. The quiz is so easy you’d be mad not to enter.

As ever, there is even more gourmet travel news, events updates and inspiration for far-flung culinary destinations on Foodtripper.com and Foodtripper TV.

Keep checking back, we have new ideas all the time.

Helen

Foodtripper: The Collection has just launched. This boutique selection of the world's best cookery holidays brings global gourmet retreats direct to your fingertips... your very own delicious escape is just a click away. On Foodtripper TV, we’ve invited top chef Rowley Leigh to make the most of Spain's short-lived Picota cherry season, cooking up a classic clafoutis. And we have a fab holiday to Spain's Jerte Valley for one lucky individual.

In anticipation of a long, hot, British summer I stay close to home dropping by Le Cafe Anglais where Rowley Leigh  - just turned 60 - shares future plans  for the restaurant and role as poster boy for the forthcoming Picota cherry season. Across town, at The Lanesborough, Heinz Beck's elegant summer menu is served. Go there for the chaud-froid Herbal infusion with tuna tartare and green tea sorbet - more Mediterranean gluttony than molecular gastronomy.

Foodtripper met the most lauded chefs on earth at The World's Fifty Best Restaurant Awards. Taking 1st prize is Noma in Copehagen knocking El Bulli off the top spot and sending a ripple effect through the chart. Heston moves down to 3rd place. Hibiscus is in, by a whisker, at number 49 leaving the total number of Brits in the top 50 at a mere three.
