The whirring hum of the hundreds of bees gets louder as we continue to rummage through the hive. The insects inquisitively hover around my net-covered face, but they never seem threatening.

It’s only at the end that Malcolm grants us our reward – he shakes the remaining bees off the honeycomb before passing it round the group. The mixture of smells is quite unique – a waxy, sweetness from the comb, is intensified by the sticky propolis the bees use as glue while there’s still lingering odour dripping out from the wood smoker used earlier.
