After our sugar rush, we kit up and head back towards the apiary. The hives aren’t much to look at – while you can buy flashy but expensive models, the main structure can be knocked together with a bit of wood and know-how.

Smoke is pumped into the hive – not to sedate the bees, but to keep them busy. The smoke simulates a forest fire, so the bees frantically stock up on nectar in preparation for a possible long journey to a new home. Plus, the bees’ tiny, nectar-filled bellies make it harder for them to bend their abdomen to sting.
