Summer food activities: Beekeeping in England

The apiary of five or six hives sits in a clearing in a wooded area away from the main buildings – not an ideal location, but it’s dry, well ventilated and away from the families which visit the farm every long summer weekend.
The windy path from the hives to edge of the forest encourages the bees to shoot up through the sun-flooded gap in the forest canopy – instead of straight towards the oncoming beekeeper.

Before we can go anywhere near the hives myself and the group of other novice beekeepers have to head indoors to do the theory.

It’s not easy having 20,000 pets.
