Ramsay Empire takes Tuscany

Gordon Ramsay’s empire is set to expand next month with the opening of a fine dining restaurant at Castel Monastero, a Tuscan retreat which was once home to the noble Chigi Saracini family.

Castel Monastero sits within thousand-year-old walls on a hilltop in the Ombrone Valley, just 20 minutes from Siena and one hour from Florence. The property has been sympathetically restored and will open in July as a luxurious 76 room retreat, featuring a magnificent Urban Retreat spa and wellness centre with dedicated spa menu; an idyllic church; two gourmet restaurants; two bars; 13th Century vaulted wine cellars; a private winery; tea room and three swimming pools. The property also boasts extensive gardens which provide glorious views of the surrounding orchards, forests, vineyards and olive groves.

Castel Monastero will pay homage to Tuscany’s fine food and wine culture with a selection of restaurants and bars showcasing local ingredients and specialities. Situated in the cobbled courtyard, ‘Gordon Ramsay at Castel Monastero’ will be opened and overseen by multi-Michelin starred chef Gordon Ramsay and promising young talent Alessandro Delfanti. The restaurant will highlight innovative cuisine and the finest Italian ingredients – pecorino cheese from Fossa, bottarga from Orbetello, lamb from Zeri, onions from Certaldo and the world renowned Chianina beef. Signature dishes will include Veal tortellini with lemon verbena infused consommé; Chianina Beef Tenderloin with Artichoke Ravioli and Certaldo Onion Jam and Red Mullet Stuffed with Black Olive Tapenade and Pumpkin Puree.

According to Ramsay, ‘I have long dreamed of having a restaurant in Italy and I am thrilled to be able to open one this year. Tuscany is where true cooking is born, where even the simplest of dishes are fresh, creative and delicious. At Castel Monastero we will use the best produce the region has to offer, from black truffles to exceptional olive oil, and we will create some unique experiences.’

Castel Monastero will open its doors to guests on 01 July 2009. For more information please visit
